A College Baseball Rain Delay has turned into a social media PR home run that’s still earning points for both Davidson and Clemson as the Youtube click counts of the player antics video keep rising with Facebook shares and Twitter Tweets energy.
Why? Because the players, given a little creative freedom, had a blast entertaining the crowd — and themselves. And it shows. Team effort and all. It’s as if the players let us into the locker room goof-around moments and we “know, like and trust them” all the more because of it.
Yes — you had us at the Bowling and we stayed for the whole show. Some of us even watched the 2nd Youtube, too.
Well done, guys!
So what’s the Social Media take away for the rest of us?
Yes – the video has things you need for “Remarkable” content — fun, funny and spontaneous. There’s the game show aspect: What sport is that they’re doing? There’s some announcer chatter that helps us remember that the show is brought to us from Davidson and Clemson, too. And there’s the reminder of our college days, too — wishing we, too, had Flip Cameras back then!
But that’s not the big social media takeaway. This is:
Social Media is Team Sport, best played Sandlot-Style, where creativity rules and the resultant energy is infectious. So release the reigns a bit. Maybe get in the game yourself.
What if the coaches or the field managers had stopped the show and said, “No — it’s not your job. Just sit and wait out the rain.”
Or worse — what if someone just sent a single clown to do the job?
How many people would be talking this weekend about the schools, the players and the memories we all have of goof-around moments in our lives?
Better yet — how many of us are hoping that some of these antics will become regular features of games, because we’d love to see this in person?
I know I am.
