Facebook: 3 Easy Steps to Better Leverage your Profile Photo

Facebook Sidebar ExampleRobin S. Fox, Facebook SidebarLocation. Location. Location. What’s long been known in the real estate world is true for your Facebook Real Estate, too. A key location on your Facebook profile or business page –> The top left sidebar, where your profile picture lives.

Facebook lets you use as much as 180 x 540 pixels in this space, much more than you need just for a larger version of your thumbnail picture. Few, though, do more than just that. Don’t miss this opportunity to expand your message — what do you do, how can people reach you. If that’s too business-y for your Facebook sensitivities, then use the space to share other pictures or other fun commentary.

Here’s all you have to do:
(1) Create a Photo no bigger than 180 x 540 pixels that includes both what you want to use as your post thumbnail plus other messaging and visuals.
(2) Upload this new photo as your new Profile Photo
(3) Adjust the Thumbnail that will be shown next to your posts. You’ll find the link for this under the Profile Photo on the same screen you used when you uploaded the picture.

Note: For my personal profile, I created a sidebar today that is similar to my business card. I did this not so much for my Facebook Friends but for everyone else, particularly anyone searching for me either on Facebook or Google.

If they land on my Facebook Profile (instead of my business page), they’ll see this:
